When it seemed that Edgar's death wasn't enough to impress his mother and made Shu withdrawn, Reiji took out his anger again by hiring a vampire hunter to assassinate Beatrix.

In order to survive on the streets, he had to abandon his timidness and innocent traits; becoming, rough, violent, aggressive, rebellious and dominating over time.
