One thing I can say factually. The Solidworks certified driver is not always 100% the best choice. I always START with that.
Take a look at the Tom's Hardware Specviewperf 12 SolidWorks page again. Note that a lower end Radeon 7750 card beat the Firepro V4900 and even Quadro K2000, among others. This is why I think you don't need the 7950. I would suggest trying to get low end Radeon card like the 7750 for your use. I think the 7750 and 7770 are discontinued now so you have have to look at newer cards. The new R7 series should be good enough. I would bet they work fine, as you have seen already on the 7950.
Another is to modify SolidWorks with a RealHack exe program (which edits the registry settings for SolidWorks). As an educator of Solidworks in further education I often get asked by students if this software will run on their home computers? I often say try it and see. The results are often surprising and I find Solidworks does indeed run perfectly well (within reason) on non-certified graphics cards. Therefore I have a few questions which hopefully someone can shed some light on?

Anyway, just something more to think about. Have been using SW since 2004/5 which makes me no expert compared to some real old-timers. However, as CAD admin in several companies I've worked for have been battling with graphics issues for awhile. We have always, or I have always, spec'ed out the Solidworks certified graphics cards and the best one the company is willing to buy. A VAR once told me 80% of all crashes are video related. I can't disprove this with experience, but I can't prove it either.
Just use the trick again to get Realview and you should be fine. Now I'm going to throw another few wrenches in the works. I have an i5 4670K cpu, which comes with Intel HD 4600 video built in.
There are several different places to get hardware and fasteners for your SolidWorks projects. The simplest is SolidWorks Toolbox which comes with SolidWorks Professional or Premium. You can also use www.3dcontentcentral.com however it is painfully slow. I recently needed to be able to download bolts and nuts with the thread fully modelled as it had to be printed in 3d with rapid prototyping. After some searching and reading of the SolidWorks Forums, I came across McMaster-Carr I was delighted to find that I could download the SolidWorks format of every fastener I required with the full history tree intact, and also with the full modelled thread.

Get the best value cpu you can first and skimp a little on the gpu. You don't need that 7950. It is complete overkill.
Switchable mode is disabled in BIOS with only nVidia graphics working. The problem was not there on another machine with AMD graphics.
Second, how do you define whether a card works 'well enough', since that will vary from person to person? It even varies for an individual; when traveling, I will tolerate behavior on a laptop that I would never accept on my desktop. The card makers justify the high prices because they supposedly put more work into making sure that the cards work well in professional applications and that work is spread across a much smaller number of cards sold. They don't like to talk about it, but they also charge more because they know that professionals will pay more. Benchmarks vary a lot in how well they match a particular users reality.
The only reliable way to find out how well a particular card will work in your environment is to test it using your own files. I assume that you used a software hack to turn on realview on your 'gaming' card.
Since you did mentioned it Jerry, yes it was a hack or sorts. I didn't really wish to mention it directly as I thought it may be seen badly. However, all is not gold.
It will run Specviewperf 12, as you can also see on the pcfoo website page. It's not really fast, but works fine. I don't see any image quality problems during the benchmark. Also, that specviewperf website has a specific SolidWorks benchmark.
It's a free download. There are some people who have run this on multiple cards and posted results already: Just take a look at the SolidWorks results. Of course this is a synthetic benchmark and not real SolidWorks, so maybe it needs taken with a grain of salt. 'Have I missed a vital point or issue here, and at what point would I notice the difference between this modified HD7950 and a W8000?' It's hard to say where the differences would show up, if at all. SolidWorks is mostly cpu limited. The video card will not be the limiting factor most of the time.

The need for certified hardware is of course very necessary in a commercial environment, crashes, poor performance and BSOD are costly. However, for education this is not such a problem. Therefore is there a list of cards by either AMD or Nvidia which are non certified but do work? I have not found one ati card (hd4xxx and above) that doesn't? In order to evaluate these queiries I have pulled my certified card from my home computer and inserted a HD radeon 7950.
