Those who bet on the Oxford outfit becoming The Next Big Indie Band are surely very smug indeed; they've always had excellent tunes, but Glass Animals previously lurked in the background, looking on rather than diving into the brawl. But now they're on the cusp of being genuinely massive. They broke America like a brittle twig.

In 2014, the band released their debut album Zaba, which blended electronics with indie guitar music and was produced by both frontman Bayley and Epworth. James Pearce AllMusic.com.
Do not feel rushed to evaluate the album, we will do our best to keep this discussion active throughout the week. Also if there is stuff I should be adding to this thread, let me know:) • • • • •.
'Gooey' 4:49 5. 'Walla Walla' 3:37 6. 'Intruxx' 2:49 7. 'Hazey' 4:25 8. 'Toes' 4:14 9. 'Wyrd' 4:05 10.
All of Zaba is coated in dripping reverb that gives it a slippery feel that matches the effortless way Glass Animals slide between electric and electronic instrumentation. 'Intruxx's looping beat sounds like a trip-hop rhythm translated into live percussion that sounds right at home next to 'Wyrd's bubbly electronics. The band is often at its most fascinating when it conveys the chilled-out sophistication of dance music via rock, as on the low-slung groove of 'Toes' or the rippling former single 'Black Mambo,' which makes the most of the jazzy androgyny of Bayley's vocals. An equally strange and sexy debut, Zaba's most audacious moments suggest Glass Animals will be an even more compelling act next time around.

Carey Hodges of noted that the 'danceable' music on Zaba contains 'bizarre, gorgeous, playful' dark atmospheres, saying it's 'ideal for lazy Sunday mornings and hazy Friday nights'. The band were regularly placed out of their comfort zone while recording Zaba. Speaking on the recording of the album, Bayley said: 'We were really worried about what our friends and family would think, basically. We kept everything quite toned down, and then we spent six or seven months experimenting, trying to find out what to do on the record, and after we finished those tracks, we had a much better idea of what we needed to do and how we wanted to sound.' Executive producer Paul Epworth was the source of more unorthodox recording methods in the studio, particularly in the vocal take of 'Gooey,' during which Bayley laid down his vocals holding a pineapple named 'Sasha Fierce', and recorded the final chorus in eight different impressions, including 'an old woman, a drunk crack addict, [and] a terrible impression of James Brown.' To replicate the sound of a choir. Nevertheless, Bayley assures that Epworth was a positive influence on the band: 'He’s a really great producer, he knows how to make everyone feel really relaxed and push you out of your comfort zone so you’re not just regurgitating ideas but coming up with new ones and trying things out – even if they don’t work.'
Australia, Europe, the UK – huge territories quickly turned into hotspots of peanut butter vibes. Second LP How To Be A Human Being arrives at an exciting time in the lives of Glass Animals. Debut record was a jungle.

We're both addicted to red vitamin water so we picked some up. Then I ordered some dumplings. Then I started playing him some sounds. Within an hour we had the beat and he was like 'I’m ready.'
Here, the characters bend to Bayley’s lyrics and a melancholy piano, both dripping with emotionality of firsthand experience. What all this adds up to is a clear departure from Zaba, but not a total abandonment of it. Two years of touring took a musically adept group and stuck them with a heavy dose of life experience.
Despite retaining an air of mystery, the lyrics are far more accessible. Lead single is easy to decode.
Imagine being sucked into the vacuum of Wonderland’s surreal, quasi-nonsense, chewed up by the nightmares of purest acid; it’s fever-dream delirious, a narcotised stream-of-consciousness. The four-piece may have been enigmas, but with something like “Cocoa Hooves” (along with “Gooey” and “Black Mambo”), no one would let them remain that way for long. Continuing on that Wonderland theme, ’ ZABA feels remarkably 19th century. This sort of thing wouldn’t have ever existed, not in Queen Victoria’s wildest fantasies, but there’s a anachronistic x The Great Gatsby, vibe – perhaps it’s in the delightfully overwrought sound, akin to Dickens’ over-description. Perhaps it’s the skeevy, dingy opium den aura they cultivate. Perhaps it’s that their sound is the aural equivalent of crushed velvet, of repressed sexuality caused by carnal, primal, lascivious raunch that penetrates every throbbing beat and squelchy synth hum. Considering their sound is so overtly forward-thinking, toying with texture, dynamics and doing to musical styles what Uri Geller does to spoons, it’s impressive they can summon these vivid sepia-toned visions.

It's a bombastic blitz of synth and guitars and sassy smirks, and it's shot through with swagger. “Leftover breakfast / cereal for lunch / she's broken but she's fun / my girl eats mayonnaise from the jar while she's getting blazed.” from “Season 2 Episode 3” is one of 2016's stranger lines, but it's crystal clear. How To Be A Human Being is rife with ZABA-isms – immense detail, tiny sample fragments, gloopy textures – and “Mama's Gun” closer to the band's misty roots than their dazzling future, but the jagged hip-hop of “Cane Shuga”, the freakout riffs in “Take A Slice”, and “Pork Soda”'s spiraling mayhem all prove that Glass Animals have plenty in the chamber to keep us guessing. The record's finest moment comes in its closing minutes. After a warped buildup of sordid tales and kooky manoeuvres, Glass Animals ready their final salvo: “Agnes”.
The album's sound is characterized by obscure and timbres. This musical motif reflects lead singer David Bayley's exotic subject matter, which was inspired by the children's book The Zabajaba Jungle.

Sharpening their claws while on tour has made for a bigger and bolder listen – feeding off a crowd's energy has singed some of the facade, allowing the group to venture out and let their curiosity run rampant. Bass is heavier, drums punchier, and the words are a lot clearer – you can belt along choruses rather than mumble mondegreens. It hasn't just been the actual show that's shaped How To Be A Human Being either, with the antics on off days being crucial. Frontman Dave Bayley has about characters he's devised from the stories he's heard while trekking across the States. Drugs, sex, love, life, death – a rich tapestry of life experience has influenced the album's ideas and direction, lyrically if not musically. Bayley's talked about the sadness and the joy of strangers' tales; the good, the bad, the ugly is all found within this new album. Bayley still won't decipher the lyrics for you however, wanting fans to find their own meanings.

Album Of The Week Oxford’s maverick noiseniks, touted by master chart-puppeteer (Bloc Party,, Florence + The Machine and many more), unloaded clip upon clip of awesome right to our temple last year. They presented us with a genuinely unique premise, stuffed with the warped tie-dye drones of psychedelia, the sultry slither of noir&B, a dash of soul, a jigger of synthpop and elements of grandiose baroque-rock, trip-hop and ‘90s pop. No one else really sounds like Glass Animals, who wield, quite majestically, both astute hind and foresight. They are, undoubtedly, one of the most exciting British bands for a long time. No pressure on their debut LP, ZABA, then. “Cocoa Hooves”, avec slug-addled visuals, was, for many, the introduction to the then elusive recluses. It swirls and pops, clicks and snaps, a whirling, twirling vortex of cracks.
They first performed live at Oxford's Jericho Tavern on 9 April 2010 supporting Chapel Club. Their radio debut was on in June of the same year, with 'Slikk Furr'. The band released their debut EP, Leaflings, on 28 May 2012, which included the single 'Cocoa Hooves'. It was released on independent label, a subsidiary and imprint of (part of the of labels). Lead singer and guitarist Dave Bayley was attending medical school at King's College, London but left after 's producer saw Glass Animals performing in London and signed them to his label Wolf Tone.
The song then 'erupting' into a 'warm' wash of electronics and bass sounds; its deep, 'sticky' beat is paired with percussion to form a 'sonic honeycomb'. 'Black Mambo' opens with a similar steady build, and leads with strings which 'cascade' over into rich, soulful. Throughout its composition, Zaba explores the concept of, allowing the, melodies, and lyrics to 'speak for themselves'. The songs feature sparse, uncluttered, -driven electronic and mix vocals, beats, and gentle percussion with unobtrusive synths and light, electronica. Zaba's songs are connected by self-described 'interludes' of echoed electronics, varied percussion, and, weaving them together so that while each individual track is distinctive, the album 'melts' into a single, mellow groove.

“Poplar Street”, the record’s penultimate track, tones down the ambient noise to shed light on a Red Hot Chili Peppers-worthy guitar melody and a wistful tale of wayward boyhood. The lines between songwriter and character noticeably blur here, and it’s hard to tell how much of the song is about Bayley himself. Those lines become almost undecipherable on closing track “Agnes”. Joey Bada$$ says, “We were in New York and the session that was supposed to start at 11am, actually started at 11pm. I fuck with Dave heavy - we understood each other’s vibe straight away and worked through the night to create this fire.
In fact, almost every song on How To Be Human Being has some merit, with closer Agnes providing a fitting conclusion. Yes, some of the lyrics still have a tendency to be a bit clumsy in their execution, but it is hard to argue with the ambitious kaleidoscopic approach of Glass Animals to their second album. It sufficiently moves their sound on from Zaba, while also successfully capturing the multifaceted nature of man.
I'm totally guessing here, but even if they'd already made some progress on the next album, the accident would introduce a whole new set of emotions & themes surrounding the trauma of almost losing Joe & his difficult recovery. If it were me, the event would have put me on a whole new course, creatively. In Joe's latest update, he did say he's feeling very creative and has started working with his kit again, so who knows? I'm guessing it will still be a while before they announce any new music.
The flute used so insistently on “Youth” returns here, stripped of its drive and repeating a bare, taunting melody. If the bulk of the album is a dizzying road trip through sonic space, the descent back to reality is a slow one. “Poplar Street”, the record’s penultimate track, tones down the ambient noise to shed light on a Red Hot Chili Peppers-worthy guitar melody and a wistful tale of wayward boyhood. Inspired by the work of American director Jim Jarmusch and the lesser known Errol Morris, each song on the LP is a vignette based around a fictional character. It is a novel ideal, one that has extended to videos and the album artwork. Such concepts can often come off as a little bit gimmicky, as well as detracting from the actual music. However, in the case of How To Be A Human Being, the detail that has gone into the end product is telling – and the record benefits as a result. Opener Life Itself is a perfect demonstration of how effective the process has been, telling the story of a sad recluse (“I can’t get a job/ so I live with my mom”) before bursting into an infectious chorus. There is a euphoria about the song, which sets it apart from the denser sound of Zaba, while Youth features a playful, sultry hook that brings to mind.
